What is Mathematics?
How can my child's grade improve?
We believe that learning comes from within oneself. With the correct learning attitude (the child) and the correct support from teachers/tutor and parents, the child will be on his way to success.

Is correction fluid/tape allowed in PSLE?
SEAB's reply (see file attached below) was:
"You are advised not to use correction fluid/tape in the national examinations because we have found instances in examinations scripts where the use of correction fluid had affected the legibility of scripts. There were also instances where answers had been left incomplete after correction fluid/tape had been applied. Furthermore, answer scripts with correction fluid/tape may be damaged if they are required to be scanned or the pages may be stuck together if the fluid is not dried."
In addition,
the risk of using correction fluid/tapes is the PSLE scripts would be stacked up to a certain height. The weight of the papers above may cause the tape to peel off or shift revealing the old answer below. In such case no marks can be awarded.
For more information relating to PSLE, you may refer to SEAB's FAQ website as follow:

What are the common problems faced by pupils/parents when solving word problems?
Pupils in Singapore (and probably everywhere else) typically find word problems difficult due to various reasons:
a) they are weak in the Mathematical language;
b) they have limited understanding of the arithmetic operations;
c) they are unable to relate the knowns to the unknowns when the problem structure is difficult to understand; and
d) they are unable to analyze problem situations.
The common mistake made by most parents of P3 to P5 who try to help in their child’s homework was that they tried to solve word problems using algebra (the method that was familiar to them). However, parents failed to note that this method was not taught to their child yet and they are not able to relate algebra method to their day-to-day school work. This will in turn confuse their child further instead of strengthening their word problem solving skill. Algebra method is suitable for pupils who are fast learners.
So, what are the heuristics use to solve word problems?
The common heuristic used in school is Model drawing. This method is especially useful for pupils who respond better to visual stimuli (e.g. pictures, drawings, etc).
This technique of model drawing is a visual way of picturing a situation. Instead of forming simultaneous equations and solving for the variables, model drawing involves using blocks or boxes to solve the problem. The power of using models can be best illustrated by problems, often involving fractions, ratios or percentages, which appear difficult but if models can be drawn to show the situation, the solution becomes clearer, sometimes even obvious.
Model drawing method essentially becomes an effective tool to help pupils to understand and break the questions into component parts, making solving and learning math a breeze.

note-taking & note-making
I am a strong supporter for making notes on your subjects esp on those subjects that you are less interested in:) It helps to summarize the key points that you need to know in a clear & precise layout (eg mind-mapping) & make learning much easier & simpler,i.e. ALL ONLY AT A GLANCE!! (instead of going through textbooks and tonnes of completed worksheets upon each revision!)
I have found a good blog (credit gives to Ms Rebecca Lee Yi Yuan) which, based on her own experience, advises on what are the important points in note-making. Clink the link below to read in-depth if you are keen to know how to do it & how it helps!:)

Time management
As a student, learning so many subjects is not an easy task. With so many things to do but only 24 hours a day, how can you do things productively? The answer is......TIME MANAGEMENT!:)
Look at your schedule to see how you can plan your time better:)
Eg,8 hours of sleep, 4 hours of miscellaneous activities, 6 hours in school. You are left with 6 hours (24-8-4-6). Then apply the 70% & 30% rule* on the rest of the time you have:)
Time for study related activities- 70% of 6h=4h
For relaxation=2h
* Rule adopted from Mr Jervin Lim - Student Development Coach
Notwithstanding that, prioritize your work is also important!:)
So...stop procrastinating and start WORKING ON it NOW!!:)
